The Petz map is not second-order optimal (compression 4x better at leading order)

Status: proved — a complete structured proof.

Area: Optimality of recovery channels (O8, Phases 3 and 3b) · Card type: result · Knowledge-base id: petz-not-optimal

Statement

Per chirality (Prop. prop:convex(4), rigor/optimality_second_order.tex): the zero-collar geometric compression (s = lambda) is an admissible recovery channel with -log F = Phi(z) = f2 z^2 (1+o(1)), f2 = c/(12 pi^2) (Theorem A, card const-f2), and Phi obeys the proved one-sided bound Phi(zeta) <= -(1/2) log(1 - 2 f2 zeta^2) = f2 zeta^2 (1 + f2 zeta^2 + O(zeta^4)) (free fermion, for 2 f2 zeta^2 < 1; rigor/rate_of_remainder.tex thm:global with sec:rrr-f2; card rate-of-remainder), whereas the ordinary Petz map (s = 2 lambda, zeta = 2z) gives Phi(2z) = 4 f2 z^2 (1+o(1)): at leading order the Petz map is worse by the factor 4. The one-sided bound Phi(zeta) <= -(1/2) log(1 - 2 f2 zeta^2) is settled from the documents for zeta < (4 f2)^{-1/2} = pi sqrt(3) = 5.44; on the rest of 2 f2 zeta^2 < 1, pi sqrt(3) <= zeta < pi sqrt(6) = 7.70, it rests on the conjectural card group-index-zero-large-s (index zero of e^{sK} beyond ||G_s||_2 < 1; rate_of_remainder.tex Correction C3 of 2026-09-24, through card rate-of-remainder); the leading-order comparison does not use that range. Phi is nondecreasing (check_note5_theory.tex prop:mono), so within the geometric family the infimum is attained at the compression, and the range constraint beta(A(BC)) subset A(B) (s >= lambda, i.e. zeta >= z) is active there (Remark rem:active). NOT proved: a two-sided O(z^3) remainder. S8 writes f2 z^2 + O(z^3) and 4 f2 z^2 + O(z^3), but the cited step gives only the leading order, and every lower bound with a rate, e.g. Phi >= f2 zeta^2 (1 - 0.99 zeta + O(zeta^2)), is conditional on a cutoff-uniform remainder (Problem 7.2 of quadratic_limit.tex; rate_of_remainder.tex:772-775 and the status table :795-798). The 2D clause of prop:convex(4) (spatial compression 2 f2 z^2 against Petz 8 f2 z^2, both chiralities) is stated in the proposition (:95-97) but no proof step addresses it; it needs the factorisation into two chiral halves, proved only for the massless Dirac fermion (check_note5_theory.tex prop:chirality; card two-chirality-law), and is not claimed here. Numerical, not proved: on lattices the best quasi-free channel found has E_rec/(-log F_Petz) = 0.270, 0.280, 0.284 at (4,8,2), (8,16,4), (4,12,2) (Table tab:opt and eq. (14), :636; card optimal-channel-structure).
